The ChallengeWorld Record - Father & Son Pacific Row
|
Once clear of the harbor, we will be on our own. Everything we need to survive will be on board our boat, including our food, supplies, and safety equipment. Every few days we will need to jump into the ocean and clean the barnacles off the bottom of the boat to prevent drag slowing us down.
Solar panels will provide the electricity to power the systems onboard including communications, GPS navigation and beacons to alert nearby ships to avoid being run-over. But most important of all is the ‘water maker’ that provides fresh water for drinking and rehydrating our rations from sea water. Out on the Ocean we will be completely self-sufficient as we row in shifts to propel the 24ft boat for more than 2,400 nautical miles. There will be no outside assistance as we battle fatigue, blisters, salt sores, sleep deprivation and potential equipment failures, all the while facing the raw elements of the Pacific Ocean. |
